In 1095, the Byzantine Emperor Alexius asked Pope Urban II help from the invading Seljuk Turks. The message was received by Pope Urban II, and in November of that year, he held the counicil of Clermont. The council lasted from November 19 to the 28th. From the 19th to the 26th, Urban talked about the Cluniac reforms of the church and the excommunication of Phillip I of France for his adulterous remarriage to Bertrude of Montfont. It wasn't until November 27th until he talked about launching his Crusade. He urged the Western Christians to fight the Muslims who were in Jerusalem and attacking the Eastern Roman Empire. The Council of Clermont is ultimately known as the start of the Crusades.
Siege of Antioch
In 1085, the Muslims captured Antioch. the Crusaders saw Antioch as a key place to set up base since it was relatively close to Jerusalem. On October 20, 1097, the Crusaders arrived on Orontes River. The main Christian leaders during the seige were Duke Godfrey, Raymond of Toulouse, and Bohemund of Taronto. The seige lasted from October 21, 1097 to June 2 1098.
